Dulux is an internationally available brand of architectural paint. They are the UK's leading paint company and you can find them EVERYWHERE. You may recognise it from the ads with the big fluffy sheep dog, Lewis. And yes, that's me and Lewis!
Every year Dulux choose a colour that will inspire our interiors for the year to come. The COTY is selected by an expert panel of colour designers, trend forecasters, design specialists, architects and editors from around the world.
Previous Colours of the Year were Denim Drift in 2017 (and I painted my bedroom in it!), Heartwood in 2018 and Spiced Honey in 2019. The Dulux Colour of the Year 2021 was Brave Ground.
The colour chosen to decorate 2020 is Tranquil Dawn, it’s a soft green hue with the power to awaken our senses.
Colour of the Year is part of the ongoing commitment Dulux makes to investing in colour and the future of paint and coatings. The decision on which colour to choose is a long one. A panel of experts selected the soft green hue to embody the nation’s mood on the approach of a new decade. It reflects a growing desire to understand what it is to be human at a time when advances in technology are making us feel increasingly disconnected from each other.
Although it was announced in September 2019 (and meant to dominate interiors in 2020), this decision was taken months ago and kept under wraps !
Colour of the Year 2020 has four supporting trend palettes which capture the essence of being human and show how Tranquil Dawn™ can be used to create spaces that enhance what we need and want in the year ahead: to seek Meaning, to Care, to Play, and to encourage Creativity.
Inspired by a cold winter’s dawn, this minimalist palette features icy green, warm cream and charcoal hues, creating a feeling of calm and contemplation.
Inspired by a warm autumnal day, a sumptuous palette with maroon and tobacco hues, pale and moss greens provides a sumptuous space for self-expression and storytelling.
Inspired by a hazy spring horizon, this palette evokes a feeling of deep relaxation and peace thanks to a blend of earthy neutrals, muted greens, dusky pinks and pale blues.
Inspired by the horizon of a hot summer morning, this palette features vivid reds, alongside baby blue, cream and pale green.
Achieve a calming atmosphere for careful thought. Use deep purples and blues for a sophisticated look.
Why not try a relaxing bedroom idea using the split effect to give your room depth? Layer your bedding with similar tones to create a sense of flow and introduce drama with a candle. Decorate sparingly for a clear space to contemplate and put your thoughts into perspective.
Bring in positivity with vibrant tones reminiscent of childhood wonder. Multicoloured stripes are stylishly disruptive. See how easy it is to paint your own stripes here.
Use pink and yellow in the highest stripes for a rising sense of light-hearted playfulness. Paint Tranquil Dawn for the biggest block at the bottom of your wall to balance the intensity of the pink and yellow. Add fun pops of vivid colour with ottomans in pink and blue. Accessorise with a mustard rug that matches the tone of your wall to unify your décor.

A light grey provides a soothing background to cook and catch-up with loved ones. It’s a versatile colour that breathes subtle warmth into a space when accentuated with hotter hues. Achieve this with coral accents in your light fittings and accessories.
Soften the industrial look of concrete tabletops with green cupboard paint using the light and airy Tranquil Dawn. Add vibrant plants for a fresh burst of energy and keep the atmosphere calm and collected with a casual spread of selected glass jars and vases for a laidback look.
