How to wear a long pleat skirt

When the extra few pounds settled in this year I reaffirmed my love for long skirts. I am trying as hard as possible * coughs suspiciously * to shed the extra weight off, but I will blame my super slow metabolism and lack of sleep for not being able to do it as fast as I would have liked to. So back to skirts. Pleats to be specific. How do you feel about them?

I am really scared of pleats in general, and if your bum is a size 14 (like mine) or more, a stylist will probably tell you to STAY AWAY FROM THEM. But I'm a rebel, always have been, so will obviously do the opposite of what a stylist would suggest, right?

Never mind what the world says, if you want to wear a pleat skirt, I say go for it. And based on the feedback I got at the school gates, it's a good look for the mom on the (school) run. If in doubt though, turn to Pinterest for ideas on how to wear the pleat skirt.

First up, Jessie Bush of WE THE PEOPLE is rocking a BCBG Dallin Pleated Metallic Maxi Skirt (£253, down to a whooping £67 on sale), Slip-On Sneakers and Le Specs sunglasses. Let's ignore the YSL bag for a minute. I can get you the look for £65. Who's with me?

If gold is TOO much for the morning school run (I get it, you don't want to give them too much to talk about), tone it down. Go for purple and grey (I also love grey and blush!). This skirt is from boohoo.com and at £18 it will not blow any budget.

And then you can make it work overtime, by teaming with black sandals and a leather jacket for 'date night', just like French lifestyle blogger Safia Vendome for New Look.

Want it or not (why wouldn't you!!) it's the summer holidays and the schools are closed, so before you leave the house to drive the kid(s) down the nearest park of Kidzania Westfield (yass), put this red number on with my favourite Love is Colour Blind t-shirt. All the moms will want to be your friend. Try with these cateye sunglasses.

Woop-woop, this one is yours truly rocking this silver Marks & Spencer pleat skirt with this Mutha.Hood Strong Girls Club t-shirt. I found the pink t-shirt a perfect partner to silver and to keep things simple I also teamed the look with silver trainers.

And sticking to pink - why not try pink velvet for your pleats? This one is also from ASOS (£38). Trainers will make it look cool, and heels will make it look sexy.
