Brand review - Cotton Ball Lights
Light isn’t purely about function. It’s about creating a space that feels inviting – a space that feels like home. When it comes to cotton ball lights, you are taking light to a whole new level: you are also adding texture and of course colour in a way that can bring a whole scheme together. With this in mind I wanted to introduce you to a brand that is set to become a household name in the UK: COTTON BALL LIGHTS. Here's my illuminating interview with brand founder Luc Clement.
Who is behind the brand Cotton Ball Lights?
Cotton Ball Lights was founded in the Netherlands five years ago. After a visit to beautiful France, where I saw these cotton ball string lights for the first time, I decided to go to Thailand. Thailand is the home of the original concept of the special cotton balls. During this visit, I took the first step towards manufacturing cotton ball string lights as well as a - now much bigger - Fair Trade project. And that's how Cotton Ball Lights was born! Originally selling them from their warehouse in Breda, Cotton Ball Lights now sell the lights outside the Netherlands and specifically in the UK and Belgium.
It's all about playing FAIR, but what does that mean to you?
Cotton Balls Lights are 100% handmade and fairly produced in Thailand. We have partnered with FTCM (Fair Trade Chiang Mai), the only producer of Cotton Balls certified by the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO).
Where do you draw inspiration for your colour combinations in the ready made sets?
Besides our ‘Make your own’-tool we have also some ready made (pre-selected) string lights after careful consideration of popular colour combinations. With these favourites we can show what is possible with our Cotton Ball Lights. Our ‘Make your Own’ tool is by far most popular online, but we think that our ready made sets are good for inspiration and can respond to current events. Think of Christmas, but also World Cup football. Last World Cup we had some ready made sets with colours of Holland, Germany, Brasil etc. Lovely when you’re watching the games of your favourite country!
Which product is your favourite and why?
We do not only have string lights, but also some beautiful cotton pendant lamps. Really a eyecatcher! And with our online tool you can choose your own colours and sizes. And they are so big that you cannot miss them in any home.
In which famous person's home would you like to see your products featured?
A soft pastel pink and grey/white combination would be lovely in Princess Charlotte's room to add a soft evening light!
Now what did I think?
Cotton Ball Lights sent me a sample of their product to review before I could decide whether it is a product I would like enough to recommend to others. It was received in good time and well packaged. There was an extra cotton ball and spare lights as well as instructions about assembling my lights. By assembling, I only mean pushing the lights into the balls and nothing more. Why do they not come assembled you ask? Well simply because it is rather easy to assemble them but if they sent them ready to hang you would not have the opportunity to choose the sequence of the colours yourself. With so many combinations, it's a great way to get the little ones involved and you're done in minutes. I have tried another UK leading brand as well this year and I can tell you that the quality is exactly the same, However, Cotton Ball Lights are cheaper!
