How to travel the world without breaking the bank

Should we say a life without traveling is a wasted life? Well, not entirely, since life isn't solely defined by traveling, but it would be a shame to miss the chance to see this beautiful world in full color.

People who say you must be a multimillionaire to travel are either lying or not sufficiently informed, as staying in luxurious hotels is not your only option. If you want to broaden your perspective, enrich your soul, and collect memories that you can use in the future as bedtime stories for your grandchildren, traveling is the answer!

This article discusses why you should turn traveling into a hobby and how to do it on a budget, so you might want to pay attention. The world awaits!

The life-changing benefits of travelling

In ancient times no one frequently traveled long distances except for nomads and traders. Most people lived and passed away within the shadow of the same place, as the only way of traveling was by animal, canoe, or on foot.

Luckily, we are almost in 2025, and you are just a flight ticket away from your dream destination. People travel now more than ever, and we cannot blame them, considering the enriching benefits of journeys:

Personal growth

Getting out of your comfort zone is a challenge, but you should know challenges often play a significant role in evolution. Traveling expands your adaptability, resilience, and problem-solving skills. It also shapes you into an open-minded individual, making you see the differences between human beings as something beautiful.

A learning experience

The best thing you can try when you want to learn a new language or improve what you already know is to spend time with people who speak it. To reinforce your vocabulary while traveling, you can keep a travel journal in your targeted language, where you describe places, strangers, and events.

Moreover, travelling can broaden your general knowledge regarding geography, history, arts, culinary dishes, and global issues.

Mental health

Sometimes, you get fed up with your hometown, and we all know boredom can be hazardous to your mental health. A study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that people who go on holidays in the tropics are less likely to suffer from mental health issues.

New city, new friends: Exploring the unknown can expand your friend list, and considering every person you meet can offer you valuable lessons, it doesn't matter if it's a long or short-term friendship.

Top-ranked tourist hotspots

This world has a lot of beautiful places, but there are specific destinations that grace nearly everyone's bucket list, considered must-see wonders of the globe:

  • Colosseum, Rome: According to the most recent estimate made in 2023, the Colosseum reached almost 12.3 million visitors.

  • Niagara Falls, Canada: A number of 11.7 million people visit this breath-taking location every year, as it is a place that hardly has competitors

  • Taj Mahal, India: It is one of the most beloved attractions in the world and it welcomes 6.5 million annual visitors.

Affordable travel destinations

Take your bikinis and swim trunks out, as the average cost for a day spent in Phuket, Thailand, is only 30 dollars! It's the same for Pattaya, another of Thailand's gems which is known for its beautiful beaches and lively nightlife.

Delhi, India, is another budget-friendly destination where you can travel, requiring an average of just 37 dollars per day. This town blends history, culture, and modernity, so it deserves a spot on your must-visit list.

Unless you spoil yourself with fancy restaurants, private transfers, and luxury villas, Bali, Indonesia, is still a budget-conscious location. Some places charge you 2 dollars for a massive portion of food; considering in other countries you spend this amount just for a bottle of water, we can say it's a great deal.

Tips for seeing the world on a dime

Of course, if you wake up and decide you want to take a trip to Honolulu the next day, you will spend a fortune on the plane ticket. The wave of spontaneity takes us all at some point, but try securing your tickets in advance, as you can benefit from early-bird discounts and special offers.

If you don't book your tickets in advance, you might spend more on plane tickets than on accommodation and daily expenses combined. Also, you can fly mid-week, compare costs from different airlines' websites, and sign up for loyalty programs. Some places can also be reached by boat, like Turkey's most gorgeous beaches.

Transportation is another thing that empties your pocket while traveling, so instead of renting a private car,  get on a bus, train, or tram, as they are  affordable and effective methods for covering long distances.

If you want to stay on a budget, eating out three times a day might not be a good idea, as it's one of your most significant expenses. We know that experiencing local cuisine is every trip's highlight, but try eating from vendors and local markets at least one meal a day.

Erasmus Projects often go underappreciated, but they offer an exceptional opportunity for students to explore the beauty of Europe. There are Youth Exchanges and Training Courses that last from 7 to 10 days, where they take care of your accommodation and transport, while all you have to do is participate in entertaining activities for approximately 8 hours each day.

Afterward, you can enjoy your free time however you want. The only requirements for applying to these projects are being at least 18 years old and residing in European countries.

However, if you live on another continent, you can try the Work and Travel Program, which accepts participants from all over the world. Most people who have tried it rate it a 10/10.

Final Thoughts

Now that you've realised you can travel to the most exquisite places without pawning your house, get out of bed, pack your bags, and go! Whether you're a solo traveller or want to travel with friends, the world is your Oyster.
